I have Multiple Blogging Disorder

Tags: Blogging, Marketing, whateva Sphinn

I didn’t want to admit it, but I just couldn’t hide it any longer. I have a problem. And admitting it is the first step to accepting it. I’m not quite who you think I am, and we need to live with it as best we can.

I do my Internet marketing blog by day, but at night I’m a different person.  I always want to do things that are very much not like the “daytime me”.  I want to tick people off. I want to start heated debates. I want to be the provocateur. My secret is that I’m starting a more personal blog on the side, where it’s going to be covering my personal political and social views. My love for you hasn’t changed at all and you’re not the problem; it’s me. But I promise not to dirty up our hangout here on SEO Honolulu; I’ll save that other stuff for when you’re not around.

Crossing Lines

Ok so now that I got that off my chest I feel better. And you know what, it’s not that weird for a blogger to have dual identities like this anyways. In fact, a great deal of bloggers have their work and home persona’s so well defined in their separate blogs, you would NEVER know they were the same person. And that’s why they’re the pros and get all the hotties and free booze. Or just a faithful fan base, which could lead to the above mentioned perks. Oh please let it be true.

Anyways, one thing that people with MBD (multiple blogging disorder) shouldn’t do is cross reference their other blogs unless it makes sense. There is no way I would ever link out to my personal blog from here simply because I don’t have the blogging authority enough to push my opinions around like that and still have anyone be OK with the subject matter being introduced into the SEO community.

If Danny Sullivan decided to start a blog about shaving rabbits and painting them up to look like ninjas, we would read his blog and respect his choice. And I would totally buy a ninja rabbit. And you know you would too, so don’t even act.

Anarchy in the Conference Room

The biggest reason I don’t think bloggers should cross reference their own blogs is the kind of effect it will have on their reputation in front of their separate audiences. Would you invite your loudest friends to an upscale event? Would you bring your classier friends to a monster truck rally? Same goes for crossing your audiences over each other; a $160 bottle of wine doesn’t go with a Whopper. So no, you can’t have it your way. (I can feel a lawsuit coming my way…)

Conclusion

10 years ago, I had piercings in my face, a 6 inch long goatee, shaved head and the disposition of your average punk rocker. Now I got 2 kids, cleaned up my image and let my inner-geek get the best of me.  But that hell-raising attitude has never left my system, and I live with it everyday.  Because of that, I have to let it out somewhere or I’ll start climbing the walls.

My name is Matt… and I have Multiple Blogging Disorder….
