Google & Linux Love Connection
So as a Linux user, I was pleasantly surprised when I saw that Google Desktop was now available for Linux. When I was on Windoze, I had my G Desktop so full of gadgets and crap that 40% of my desktop was owned by Google. But oddly enough.. something is amiss here with the Linux Google Desktop.
No Gadgets?!
Sigh.. according to this write up from Desktop Linux, a Google Rep said
We focused most of our efforts on desktop search. Gadgets and sidebar are not supported, but will probably be added in the future.
I sincerely hope so. I’ll be waiting with baited breath people. Baited. Breath.
But I guess the thing that I can’t help but wonder is why did it take so long to come into existence? There’s already Picasa for Linux. Oh and there’s Google Earth as well. Maybe we can get some Google Talk goin on up in here?
Though not totally confirmed and still often disputed, a percentage of Google employees use a modified version of Ubuntu Linux called Goobuntu at the Googleplex. Also let’s not forget that Google clearly uses PYTHON coding on a good deal of their pages and apps (look for that .py extension on the page names) which is most commonly compiled on Linux.
Google is also notorious for showing love for Open Source technology (kudos on that one) by hosting events like Summer Of Code, as well as sharing their own API’s with developers.
Oh yeah, and they’re not Microsoft therefore they have a choice of what OS they can use. All 3 flavors are up there; Microsoft, Linux and Mac. Hear that Bill Gates and Steve Jobs? This is America; we like FREEDOM OF CHOICE. Damn pinko bastages…
So my point is this; if there is so many Linux boxes floating around and so many damn developers (some of the best out there supposedly), then what was the hold up on this? No idea, but if you’re seeing the Linux/Google love connection, then you’re probably thinking the same thing I’m thinking. No not about the jelly donut… but that does sound good…
Google is becoming the best Linux marketing piece ever. And this is such a good thing that I can’t even stand it.
Sidenote:
If you have any interest in checking out Linux, then I strongly suggest that you download a copy of PCLinuxOS (its free, so relax) and burn it to disc and give it a shot. You can check this out WITHOUT ever installing it on your hard drive via the LiveCD technology that runs the whole operating system from a CD. Just boot up with the disc and you’re on your way.
OK I’m done being a Linux cheerleader.
